This house and the accompanying gardens are not typical, it was all designed and constructed with care by my father, a true Alaskan "Renaissance Man" who was born in Point Barrow and grew up in Nome. The story of the house begins in Washington State, in the early 90's. Our family farm in the Snoqualmie valley experienced a powerful windstorm which knocked down several enormous second-growth Douglas Fir trees. There are sawmills in Western Washington that are still equipped to handle the giant trees that used to populate the region, we enlisted Davidson Saw Mill to haul out and cut the fallen trees into the beams that now make up this house. My father bought a 1920's vintage wood planer from the Port Townsend shipyard, hauled it back to our farm in his pickup, just to be able to plane down the beams himself to fit the blueprints. Unable to complete the house in King county, my father hauled the wood all the way to Homer, where it sat in storage for 15 years, awaiting the perfect location. Once he found the Fernwood lot, construction preparation began.
Everyone in the family was involved, one way or another in the construction, from clearing the lot to raising the timberframe, painting the walls and helping plant the gardens.
My father was a passionate gardener, and every flower he planted was carefully selected. The contrast of colors and types of plants were very important, tulips, daffodils, delphiniums, forget-me-nots, poppies, lilacs, mountain ash and the 7500 peonies decorating every corner of the property.
I hope the next caretakers of this house can appreciate how much love was put into it, how much passion, and appreciate the details and uniqueness.
